Cory Aquino: Triumphs and Trials of a Democracy Icon

The Philippines underwent a major political shift in 1986, when the people power revolution led to the ousting of Ferdinand Marcos, who had been ruling the country for more than two decades. In his place, the late Benigno Aquino Jr.'s wife, Corazon "Cory" Aquino, was elected as the country's first female president. Her presidency, which lasted from 1986 to 1992, was marked by both successes and setbacks.

The return of democracy to the nation was one of Aquino's major accomplishments. She fought for the ratification of a new constitution, which reinstated democratic procedures, ended the previous autocratic rule, and secured human rights.

Aquino's administration implemented numerous economic policies that stimulated economic growth and development. The Aquino government focused on privatizing government-controlled businesses, reducing trade barriers, and promoting foreign investment. She also championed for the creation of the Bases Conversion and Development Authority, which helped convert former US military bases into productive civilian use, creating new businesses and jobs in the process.

The Comprehensive Agricultural Reform Law (CARL), which was passed in 1988, was another noteworthy accomplishment of the Aquino administration. The CARL attempted to distribute land to farmers fairly and enhance their economic circumstances.

However, Aquino's administration was also marred by controversies and disappointments. One of the most significant was the government's response to the 1989 Luzon earthquake, which left over 1,600 people dead and thousands more injured. Her administration was criticized for its slow response and inadequate relief efforts.

Another major setback was the government's inability to deal with the communist insurgency and the emergence of militant organizations like the New People's Army. The violence endured and continued to destabilize the nation despite multiple peace efforts.

Additionally, Aquino's government faced challenges in managing the country's economy. The administration faced high inflation rates and a mounting budget deficit, which led to public outcry and economic instability.

Despite these difficulties, Aquino's administration had a significant effect on the Philippines. Her unwavering support for democracy and human rights, along with her initiatives to promote economic growth and development, helped the nation advance in the years that followed her presidency.
