Skytrax 2023 World Airport Survey: No Philippine Airports in Top 100, Singapore's Changi Named Best Airport

The 2023 World Airport Survey conducted by Skytrax, an air transport research firm, has announced that none of the Philippine airports made it to the top 100 list of the world's best airports this year. The survey named Singapore's Changi Airport as the best airport in the world for this year, followed by last year's winner, Doha Hamad. Other top airports include Tokyo's Haneda, Seoul's Incheon, and Paris' Charles de Gaulle.

The top 10 airports in the world also include Istanbul, Munich, Zurich, Tokyo's Narita, and Madrid's Barajas. However, Philippine airports did not make it to Asia's top 10 list for this year, which includes Singapore's Changi, Tokyo's Haneda, Seoul's Incheon, and Osaka's Kansai, among others.

When asked for a comment, Eric Apolonio, the spokesman for the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP), pointed out that results vary based on survey dates, and there are over 1,200 international airports worldwide. Apolonio also mentioned that NAIA, Clark, Cebu, Davao, and Iloilo/Kalibo are among the top Philippine airports. He added that CAAP is working on improving these airports to be at par with Asian neighbors by adding night-rated airports and improving facilities.

Apolonio emphasized that airports in Cebu and Iloilo were among the top 20 airports in Asia in 2019, according to another survey. In February, the Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA) was named the best airport in Asia in the Under 5 Million Passenger Category by Routes Asia, beating 200 other countries. Melanie Ng, the governor of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry-Central Visayas, expressed happiness and pride that Cebu airport received this recognition, saying that it will put Cebu on the global map as a premier destination for tourism and investment.

It is worth noting that the 2023 World Airport Survey also named the cleanest airports in Asia, with Tokyo Haneda, Singapore Changi, and Centrair Nagoya taking the top three spots. Other airports on the list include Hong Kong, Seoul Incheon, Kansai, Fukuoka, Jakarta, and Kuala Lumpur.

The lack of Philippine airports on the top 100 list may be disappointing, but it is clear that efforts are being made to improve them. The recognition of MCIA as the best airport in Asia in its category is a testament to this. Hopefully, the Philippines' airports will continue to improve, making them more attractive to travelers and contributing to the country's tourism and economic growth.
